Serious Talk about a Serious Subject

I want to discuss something that has been bothering me for a while. It may be a delicate subject, but someone needs to speak out and say something. Denying the problem won't fix it, and I can sit by and act like nothing is wrong. yes, someone needs to speak out, so I will do it. It won't be pretty, but it needs some publicity.

What, you might be asking yourself, could be so important that this medical student will take time out of her studying schedule to talk about it? And why should I be concerned? Well, my friend, this very topic might, someday, affect you. Yes, I want to talk about something important. I want to talk about public women's restrooms.

For years I have used public women's restrooms (PWR). I don't like to admit it, but sometimes it's a must. Take, for instance, those days when you've had one too many cups of coffee and must make a long commute home. You might think to yourself, "I'll be fine. I can make it home." But you've had too much coffee, and once in your car, you realize that you're just fooling yourself. You must use the public women's restoom. Don't be ashamed. We've all had to indulge that little part of ourselves called "the bladder". It's ok, no one is here to judge you. We're all in this together.

Now, upon entering the PWR, a woman will see something that will make her ponder for a long time. A mystery of mysteries, something that might never be figured out in our life time. Yes, she will wonder, "Why is a gender that is so obsessed with beauty and grooming so completely dirty and disgusting in the public women's restroom?" It's a question we all ask ourselves. Why, for instance, do some women forget to flush? A woman wouldn't accept that behavior from her husband at home, so why would she do that in public? Or, why are women incapable of getting the paper towels into the garbage cans? And why do they just leave them on the floor? I have a feeling that these will remain mysteries for a long, long time.

What, you might be asking yourself, can we do about this? Well, I'll tell you - we rise up and fight back! We'll make sure we flush the toilets, and assure that our paper towels make it into the garbage. And if the restroom is dirty, we'll notify someone who works there so the situation can be dealt with! Only together can we make our PWRs clean.

(I wanted to post this earlier in the day, but time always gets the better of me. Here's hoping you had an April Fool's Day full of laughter!)

WHW - I spent a summer as a hotel maid. That was bad enough. I can't even imagine having to clean restrooms used by the general public.

Sonia - A study? Whoa! The findings don't suprise me one bit tho!

Chris - Trust me, you don't wanna see how the other half lives. Trust me.

Aynde - I think women are half tsunami - that has to be the explanation for all the splashed water and the debris all over the floors!

Christina - *snerk!!*

Ohmigosh YES!!!  What is it with women?!?!?!  I'd bet ANYTHING that 95% of ladies maintain bathrooms in their homes that--while not perfect-- are not generally considered to be a public health hazard.  I bet some of them, most of them, keep bathrooms decorated carefully and cleaned regularly.  Yet it is these same women who turn any PWR into the most foul place on earth; even worse than *DUN DUN DUN* my son's closet.

I don't get it either but I bet Tony comes over here and makes a sexist joke about it.

You've written about important medical news and social issues, and what do I chime in about?  Public restroomage.

I've always wondered how the other half lives.  Based on the toilet seat up vs down debate, I figured it was some panacea so clean that women could eat off the porcelein thrown!  But now, Geralda, you've exposed the myth!  Ladies, the gloves are off!

YES!!!!!  Great post.

If my formal life as a janitor, I was amazed at the contradiction you pointed out so well.  The PWR's I had to clean were freakin industrial disasters.

Thanks for the great laugh.
