3월 30일 Rage against the Professor! (Or How Hormones Make Cara a Grumpy Gal)I would like to think that I am fairly laid back - in general, I don't get too upset with situations, and if I do, my anger subsides fairly quickly. However, this week, some individuals have unleashed the beast.
I arrived late to class on Tuesday, and was treated to yet another different clinician-professor. This professor- I'll call him Bob - Bob is a neurologist and came to talk to us about head injuries, spinal cord injuries and other fun things. Bob says that it is important for the body to be as oxygenated as possible, as a decrease in oxygen often results in reduced recovery from brain and spinal cord trauma. Bob then asked who in the class smoked, and since I cannot lie (everyone in the frecking class knows I do), I raised my hand. Bob then decided to make an example out of me in front of everyone, and proceeded to hammer on me for a while during lecture.
Now, there are very few things that really make me mad. No one can attack my parents, no one can attack Jon, no one can attack my dogs, and while people can say what they want about me, NO ONE mocks me about my frecking smoking. The more I am nagged, the more I'll smoke. That said, this guy just kept needling me about it - along the lines of "Cara's gonna this" or "Not Cara because she smokes." Maybe he thought he was funny, but I really wanted to verbally assault him right then and there.
After class, I thought about it, and decided I was overreacting, and was making a big deal out of nothing. Then, I started to change my mind. Fellow classmates started approaching me, asking why Bob decided to make an example out of me, asking me what his problem was, and telling me they thought he was out of line. Heck, even the Mormon students, THE MORMONS, were on my side!! Jon, who is livid about it, thinks I should file a formal complaint, but, really, would it even be worth the time and the energy? I have bigger fish to fry, and more important things (*cough* neuro *cough*) to deal with.
While the story should end here, it doesn't. Today, we had to deal with another professor gone wild. I'll call this professor Bob II, so we don't confuse him with Bob. So, Bob II was leading our large group discussion for our clinical medicine class today. Now, today's topic was hypertension, and we were supposed to read a 52 page "condensed" report from some research committee that looks only at hypertension. Granted, we got the article last Thursday (while on break), but we also had neuro grand rounds projects to put together and present, we're closing in on our last week of neuro (and many people are freaking out), and ongoing community service projects. Unfortunately, going over a 52 page scientific research report (which is about as fun as sticking a fork in your eye) for a 2 credit class isn't high on the priority list. Needless to say, BobII was quite upset with the fact that people had not read the article, and proceeded to berate us as if we were incompetent children. The berating lasted about 5 minutes, but it was enough to really make me mad.
At this point, I have to point out that at this moment, all I want is chocolate, a nap, and a punching bag (and if you can't figure it out from this, then, um, I guess you just don't.) The last thing I want is to be talked to like I am a moronic, irresponsible child, and I certainly don't want any more crap from a professor. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands, so to speak. I had read the article (I can't quote it to you, but I did get through it) so I pulled a reverse pimp - I started firing off questions as to the reasons behind the statements in the report, and asking why certain things were recommended. Questions like, "The report states that thiazide-type diuretics should be the first line in pharmacological treatment of hypertension, but never states why. Could you explain why these drugs are used over loop diuretics?" and "The report states patients should adhere to a high calcium/ high potassium diet, then states we can use calcium channel blockers to treat hypertension. This seems counterintuitive - what is the purpose behind it?"
Unfortunately, the Force was stong with him, and Bob II, in turn, started pimping the other physician - a guy who just finished his residency, and had already been pimped for years. *sigh* At least Bob II can't say that none of the students read the report.
